A possible eleventh incident happened on Wednesday just before 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Amherst and Cumberland avenues.

The 36-year-old woman tells police a man approached her from behind and groped her. She described the suspect as a man of an unknown race, about 5'9 and wearing a black t-shirt, khakis and a blue hat.

Since September, Fairfax police report 10 other instances of a man groping women in the 7200 block of Commerce Street in Springfield. Another woman claims she was groped Monday night around 6 p.m.

Tuesday afternoon in Springfield, Fairfax County police investigators got a first-hand account of the groper's actions from one of his victims.

Police have only a vague description of the suspect: A possible Hispanic male in his 30's, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8, average build and possibly with a beard or goatee.

Investigators are handing out fliers and talking to neighbors but so far there are no strong leads.

One challenge, police say, could be a cultural one in the predominantly Hispanic area.

"Many times, people come from countries where they don't immediately report things to police, they possibly don't know how to report things to police,” says Lucy Caldwell, Fairfax County Police spokeswoman.

Mary Hasty, who often shops in the area, isn't intimidated one bit.

"If I could get my hands on him I'd kick him or attack him,” she says.
