Virginia: Proposed list of restricted animals includes elephants, rhinos
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Elephants, cape buffaloes, rhinos and chimpanzees - they're all among a list of proposed restricted species in Virginia.
The state's Dangerous Animals Initiative on Wednesday recommended those animals and about a dozen more for a proposed list of restricted exotic, potentially dangerous animals.
The report now goes to Gov. Bob McDonnell and the General Assembly.
The initiative was launched after a man in Ohio let loose more than 50 lions, tigers and other exotic wildlife before killing himself one year ago. The animals had to be put down out of concern for the public's safety. Ohio later enacted tightened regulations on exotic animals.
Under the proposed restricted animal list, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries would strictly limit ownership of those animals.
