'Modern Family's' Ariel Winter to find out fate of her family after trial
LOS ANGELES (AP) - A trial to determine who raises "Modern Family" star Ariel Winter is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles.
The 14-year-old actress has been living with her adult sister since early October, when a judge temporarily stripped their mother of custody amid allegations of physical and emotional abuse.
Superior Court Judge Michael Levanas will begin hearing live testimony and statements from both sides Wednesday about who would provide the better environment for Winter.
Her mother, Chrisoula Workman, has denied abusing the actress. She claims her adult daughter, Shanelle Gray, would be an unfit guardian.
Levanas noted at a hearing last month that investigators found there was evidence Workman had been emotionally abusive toward Winter, but said allegations of physical abuse were inconclusive.
The trial is expected to last several days.
