Accident on I-97 turns into hit-and run with one dead
Maryland State Police are searching for the driver involved in a hit and run fatal crash this morning following an accident on I-97 between Route 32 and Benfield Doulevard.
The hit and run came after a box truck was involved in a single-car accident, where both the driver and the passenger were ejected. The accident happened at 3:15 Tuesday morning when the vehicle overturned. The passenger was ejected into the southbound lanes of I-97.
The victim was apparently standing up in either the left or center lane of southbound I-97 when he was hit by a southbound vehicle that did not stop. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers do not have a description of the striking vehicle at this time. Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have been in the area at the time is urged to contact Maryland State Police at the Glen Burnie Barrack at 410-761-5130.
The preliminary investigation indicates a truck was northbound on I-97 when, for unknown reasons, it entered the median, struck the guardrail and overturned. The driver of the truck was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries.
