For the second time in a week, a marked Alexandria police cruiser was stolen and recovered this past weekend, officials say.

The second theft, this time of a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria, was discovered just after 4:30 a.m. Saturday from the 1500 block of Princess Street, police say. Not long after, authorities in D.C. reported that the stolen cruiser had been found in Northeast Washington.

Alexandria Police officials say that no department-owned equipment was taken from the car.

“We've had cars damaged, we've had them attacked, we've had things broken into,” says Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook. “We've never had a car stolen before.”

The cars were parked, as is routine, outside the homes of two officers overnight

Police say the thieves used something as simple as a slim Jim to break into the Crown Victorias.

The theft of this second police car came just hours after an Alexandria cruiser was recovered after being stolen from the 2700 block of Duke Street. That car was found at about 5 p.m. Friday in Prince George's County.

Officials also confirmed that a department-owned shotgun and laptop were taken from the first stolen cruiser. The items remain missing.
