Anthony Hammond Jr. killed by Maryland State Trooper
ELKTON, Md. (AP) - A state trooper has fatally shot a man in Elkton following a chase by car and on foot. State police identified the man as 41-year-old Anthony Hammond Jr. of Elkton.
Police say the shooting occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. Thursday. Trooper Michael Cox was not seriously injured in the incident. Investigators say Cox recognized Hammond's vehicle earlier and knew Hammond was wanted on arrest warrants.
Cox followed the vehicle, but it kept driving, turned off its lights and struck a parked car before two people fled. Police say Cox chased Hammond on foot and saw him kick in the door of a townhouse. The trooper followed Hammond into the home.
Investigators say Hammond then ran toward Cox and tried to take the officer's gun. That's when Cox fired the pistol.
