David Hang sentenced to life for killing Jessica Nguyen
The stepfather of a murdered 12-year-old honors student who was found slain in her Gaithersburg home was sentenced to life without parole Monday afternoon.
The jury previously convicted David Hang, 42, of first-degree murder in the slaying Jessica Nguyen.
On May 31, 2011, Jessica was found stabbed to death in the basement of her family's Gaithersburg town home. The Medical Examiner said she was stabbed 45 times.
"Now she is punished by her daughter's death. It serves her right,” Hang was recorded saying during a jailhouse phone call.
That recording is among the evidence used by prosecutors Monday to argue for the sentence of life without parole.
During an emotional sentencing hearing, Nguyen's mother and sister spoke of their constant grief. Hang proclaimed his innocence.
Prosecutors say cellphone records indicated Hang was within one mile of Nguyen's home, and his DNA was found on the sheath of a small sword in the home.
Nguyen's mother had married Hang to help win U.S. citizenship. When Hang fell in love with another woman, he became furious that he couldn't get a divorce.
It took the jury about six hours to come to the guilty verdict. As it was read in court, Hang broke down in tears.
