Diego Vasquez Mendoza sought in fatal Culpeper hit-and-run
A 32-year-old Culpeper man is being sought in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a man and injured another person Sunday night, December 23, police say.
Virginia State Police have obtained a warrant for felony hit-and-run for Diego Vasquez Mendoza in connection with the crash, which happened just after 6:15 p.m. Sunday on Route 17 just south of Route 28. The crash killed 58-year-old Douglas Rabren, a Stafford resident, and injured 59-year-old Deborah Rabren.
Police say that Mendoza, who was driving a pickup truck, rear-ended a Scion that was driven by Rabren as they traveled south. The impact of the crash pushed the Scion into another car, and both Rabren's vehicle and the truck careened off the roadway.
The driver of the truck then fled the scene and authorities are searching for Mendoza, the truck's owner. It was not immediately clear whether or not Mendoza was behind the wheel when the crash happened, though.
Deborah Rabren was taken to an area hospital and treated for serious injuries. The driver of the third car involved in the crash was not harmed.
