Grateful Dead: If it were a beer, how would it taste?
Today’s twirl through the pop-culture world finds the Grateful Dead, a hobbit, Madonna, Jessica Simpson, other things, and the mystery music video.
DRINK TO THE DEAD: Only in California, per the Los Angeles Times, “Grateful Dead experts can talk at length about the band's varying periods, be it the band's jazzy, never-ending folk excursions or its blues-rock roots. But regardless of the era, if you have ever listened and enjoyed any of it, and then thought, 'I wonder how this would taste,' now is your time to speak up. Deleware's adventurous Dogfish Head Brewery is in the final stages of soliciting fan ingredients for its American Beauty, a pale ale it is concocting with the help of surviving members of the Grateful Dead.” http://lat.ms/UEbiZo
A HOBBIT HABIT: Still getting’ it done, per Entertainment Weekly, “Despite the arrival of two holiday heavyweights, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey retained the top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row. Warner Bros.’ $250 million fantasy prequel was held out of the top spot from Tuesday until Thursday by Les Miserables, but over the traditional weekend frame Hobbit dipped only 11 percent to bring in $32.9 million, and its domestic total now stands tall at $222.7 million.” http://bit.ly/Z1L5Xo
BABY BUMP: Hello, extra pounds, per Us Weekly, “Jessica Simpson is no longer hiding her second pregnancy! The mom-to-be tweeted a new photo of herself Sunday, Dec. 30 posing in front of a mirror while wearing a bikini with her bare baby bump in full view. "Bumpin' and proud!" Simpson wrote as the caption.” http://usm.ag/ZNdodB
MATERIAL GIRL: Not like a virgin, per Rolling Stone, “The power of Madonna shows little sign of waning, at least at the cashbox. According to Pollstar, the Material Girl was the runaway leader in concert grosses for calendar year 2012, taking in $296.1 million. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band took the number two spot with $210.2 million. Like Madonna, Springsteen played to more than two million fans this year.” http://rol.st/UsEph6
NOT A FAN: Ask a simple question. . ., per The Hollywood Reporter, “Many thousands of moviegoers and musical theater enthusiasts lined up to see the big screen version of Les Miserables over the holiday break. Among those in the audience: American Idol alum and stage veteran Adam Lambert, who took issue with the film's vocal performances and let his opinion be known via Twitter. "Les Mis: Visually impressive w great Emotional performances. But the score suffered massively with great actors PRETENDING to be singers," the season eight runner-up tweeted. "It's an opera. Hollywood's movie musicals treat the singing as the last priority." http://bit.ly/WUSZOi
CHARLIE SHEEN: Sigh, per E!, “The Anger Management star blundered big time when he was caught on tape making a homophobic slur while hosting the grand opening of a bar in Cabo San Lucas Friday night. A video has surfaced online that shows Sheen at the mic at the ritzy El Ganzo Hotel's new rooftop watering hole, Epic (where he's reportedly a partner), and asking partygoers, "Lying bunch of f----t a--holes, how we doing?" http://eonli.ne/UE9MGB
SPY GAMES: Of the idle rich, per Radar, “The legal team of Shaquille O'Neal's former mistress, Vanessa Lopez, will be deposing the ex-NBA star's one-time employee, Shawn Darling, who is expected to assert that the legendary NBA superstar ordered him to spy on Lopez, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.” http://rdar.co/Uflp4D
OBIT: Just the facts, per The Wrap, “Mike Hopkins, the Oscar-winning sound editor behind "King Kong" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, died in a drowning accident in New Zealand on Sunday. He was 53.” http://bit.ly/VeSjlG
