Police have cleared the original second suspect in the killing of a 14-year-old in Lewisdale and a warrant has been issued for a different suspect.
Prince George’s County Police have now identified Luis Carlos Guzman-Ventura, 18, of the 2300 block of Rittenhouse Street in Lewisdale, as the second suspect. A warrant for first degree murder has been issued for Guzman-Ventura, and detectives are searching for him.
Police had been searching for 22-year-old John Junior Hernandez of Hyattsville, but now say he has been “vindicated,” according to the PGPD News Blog.
Police had earlier arrested Jose Luis Rodriguez-Nunez, 24, and charged him with second degree murder for the killing of Eliezer B. Reyes, 14, who was shot just after midnight, early Wednesday morning, in the 2200 block of Sheridan Street.
Officials say they're looking into the possibility that the shooting was gang related.
Neighbors noticed a large group of young people at the corner around the time of the shooting.
"I seen a whole group of Latinos sitting right there," resident Khristina Lenori.
According to law enforcement sources those gathered included members of a Lewisdale neighborhood gang. Another gang claiming turf in the area is the notorious MS-13. Their tags can be seen on road signs in the neighborhood. Police believe that conflict may have led to the shooting.
"All I heard was pow, pow, pow, pow," Lenori recalled.
Neighbor Floyd Bennett added, "It sounded like a machine gun. Then I went to the door."
Reyes was mortally wounded in the drive-by shooting; a second young person was grazed by a bullet.
Lenori said, "He was just laying down. He wasn't moving, and they was holding him."
Investigators say Reyes was not known as an official member of the Lewisdale gang, but at least two people in his group are.
