Inner Loop crash on I-495 toward Tysons snarls traffic
A pair of crashes, including one that killed a person, near the Springfield mixing bowl caused major delays as the evening rush hour approached.
The first crash happened at about 2:20 p.m. on a flyover ramp from westbound I-495 to the I-95 HOV lanes. In that incident, a tractor-trailer overturned, but no one was injured. Overhead video from the scene showed the truck leaning against the ramp barrier over the freeway.
Police say at least a foot of "municipal waste," i.e. construction and household materials, from the truck fell onto the westbound I-495 lanes.
Just before 6 p.m., the flyover ramp was re-opened.
The driver, Hector Y. Lopez-Navarro, 41, of Woodbridge, Va., was charged with reckless driving.
About 10 minutes later, a box truck crashed on the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway near the Braddock Road exit. One person was killed in the crash.
