The Cheverly same-sex couple held a commitment ceremony eight years ago in D.C. But on Tuesday, they welcomed friends into their home for a "legal" wedding.

At 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, seven same-sex couples tied the knot at Baltimore City Hall. The ceremony was officiated by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

“There are so many people who have a chance now to have the life they've wanted,” the mayor says.

Maryland voters narrowly passed a November referendum legalizing same-sex marriage.

And on Tuesday came the first vows:

Ceremonies are taking place in other parts of the state as well. Same-sex couples in Maryland have been able to get marriage licenses since Dec. 6, but they did not take effect until Tuesday.

Nine states and the District of Columbia have approved same-sex marriage.
