Montgomery County parents petition to start school later
They packed today's board of education meeting holding signs and wearing t-shirts.
Parents representing the more than 10,000 Montgomery County students who support a later school start time. They proposes that high school change start times from 7:20 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.
Mandi Mader is one of the parents leading the charge. She and many others say they support studies that show starting high school before 8 a.m. hurts student success.
"It affects them educationally, health and safety, learning and memory,” Mader says. “There are really severe consequences."
Mader and other parents believe if high school, specifically, started later in the morning:
-Attendance would go up
-Tardiness would decrease
-And students pay more attention in class because they'd be we'll rested.
But there are some parents who think the current start time is just fine and it's up to parents to encourage their kids to go to bed early.
"I'm okay with it being what it is right now,” Cherrika Robinson. “Because it’s convenient for us."
But the parents who support changing start times believe something can be done that will be convenient for parents and beneficial for students.
"There's lots of creative solutions and were not proposing any solution just yet we've all got to put our heads together and come up with a good solution," Mader.
