National Zoo's Andean bear pregnant with twins
The National Zoo is cautiously optimistic their Andean bear, Billie Jean, will give birth to twins soon.
Zoo veterinarians saw the cubs during an ultrasound in Nov., the zoo reports. This would be Billie Jean's second time giving birth.
But the zoo says there's no guarantee the birth will happen. Andean bears can resorb fetuses at any stage of the pregnancy. There's also the possibility Billie Jean could harm or kill the cubs after giving birth.
Zoo officials are optimistic this won't happen as Billie Jean did well with her last set of cubs.
The father of the cubs, Nikki, was humanely euthanized in Aug. 2012 after a year-long battle with cancer.
You can watch Billie Jean on the zoo's Andean bear camera here.
