SoberRide offers a safe, free way to get home
It happens more than 100 million times a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control: U.S drivers jumping behind the wheel after drinking too much.
Roughly one-third of car-related deaths involve a drunk driver. And with hours-long Redskins tailgates on the horizon and New Year's Eve just days away, this week brings even more opportunities to make what could be a fatal mistake.
“There's a 60 percent … uptick in drunk driving incidents on New Year’s Eve so there's every reason to be concerned,” says Kurt Erickson, President and CEO of the Washington Regional Alcohol Program.
Erickson says he hopes drivers will make a safer choice by using SoberRide. It's a free taxi service that runs from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. everyday until January.
So far this December, SoberRide has accounted for more than 1,000 safe rides.
“It means we're taking would be drunk drivers off of our shared roadways,” Erickson says.
Calls must originate in the Washington region and callers must be 21-years-old or older.
To order a SoberRide taxi, call 1-800-200-taxi, or #wrap if you are an AT&T customer.
SoberRide offers free cab service for up to a $30 fare. All taxis are pre-paid by donations to the Washington Regional Alcohol Program.
