The Guardian Angels will be patrolling a Southeast Washington neighborhood where a teen was shot at a bus stop.

Police say she was making her way to school at the time of the attack.

The Phelps ACE High School student was waiting at a bus stop in the 1400 block of Morris Road around 8:30 a.m. when she was approached by a masked gunman. The suspect took her school bag and shot her in the leg, MPD spokesman Ofc. Anthony Clay says.

The suspect then fled the area.

D.C. Fire officials (@IAFF36) say that the victim was treated and taken to an area hospital. She has since been released from the hospital.

Police later recovered the backpack.

Neighbors say the student's mother was so upset she had to be hospitalized.

MPD officials said in a tweet that they're looking for a black man who was wearing a black jacket and red face mask at the time of the shooting. Police say the suspect may still be armed.
