The sound of a chainsaw was common Thursday as people cleaned up after a large tree crashed onto a home in Takoma Park. That sound was much different than what Ann Procter had heard an hour earlier. The sound her large tree crashing into her neighbor’s house was a reminder of another sound she used to hear.

“It sounded like a bomb,” she says. “I’ve been living in Afghanistan and I know that noise that came through the city from time to time. It’s an unmistakable noise.”

A car and home were damaged, but no one was hurt. A gaping hole left by the tree’s root filled with water from Wednesday’s rain.

In McLean, a tree blocked traffic along Georgetown Pike. No cars were damaged, but there were a few shaken motorists.

Another close call was in Silver Spring where a huge tree crushed Frederick Morse’s home. He’s been sick lately and fortunately wasn’t inside at the time.

“If I wouldn’t have been in the hospital I’d have been in there,” he says.

It was more bad timing for the homeowner, who is mid-way through a lengthy renovation of his home of nearly 40 years.

“We knew it was going to fall,” he says. “We’ve been talking about it for two years. It’s rotten and just a little bit of wind and it was going to break.”
