Two people dead after Beltsville car accident
Two people were killed early Friday morning in a fiery, head-on crash on Route 1 in Beltsville, police say.
It happened just before 1:40 a.m. on Baltimore Avenue near Powder Mill Road, Prince George's County Police say, when a Chevrolet Camaro traveling southbound crossed the median and slammed into a tow truck. One of the vehicle's occupants was thrown from the car, while the other became trapped as the Camaro caught fire.
Kenny Neely drove up minutes after the crash.
"It was terrible trash debris everywhere,” Neely says. “The engine from the tow truck was laying on the street."
Both of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. They have not yet been identified, as police say neither of them had identification on their person. The tow truck driver suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken for evaluation to an area hospital.
Steve Perkins lives just down the street and this morning saw the aftermath of the crash as he was headed to work.
He says he's often worried something like this would happen here because motorist drive through way too fast.
“People got to take the time,” he says. “They rush. Everybody wants to rush in the morning and that's what happens when you rush.”
An investigation into the official cause of the crash continues.
