Happy New Year and happy birthday!
The first New Year baby in our area was born at the stroke of midnight and the second was very, very close behind. Call it a fight to beat the clock, and Emily Anita Mendoza just made it.
“I wasn’t expecting it because I wasn’t due until the ninth,” says her mother, Elvira Arias. She was induced after doctors realized she was having high blood pressure issues. She didn’t even get a chance to get pain medication, but once baby Emily arrived at MedStar, all of that didn’t matter.
“I felt like crying.”
It was a first for Emily’s father, who missed his son Luis’ birth six years ago.
“It’s beautiful, you know once she comes out she starts crying. You see that she is healthy and you get to hold her. It’s like one of those feelings you’ll never feel ever in your life,” says Fernando Mendoza.
Emily is already a pretty competitive girl. At Holy Cross, another baby girl, Brianna, was born right at midnight.
“I see it as if she was a sign for this year being a lot better than last year,” says Mendoza.
Several hours later at 2:43 a.m. another New Year baby was born. The baby, a girl, was born at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. She weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces and both she and the mother are doing well.
