On average, Americans receive more than 80 billion pieces of unsolicited or "junk" mail each year. This time of year can be even worse because retailers send out coupons and advertisements for holiday deals. The extra items can be a pain because much of it is thrown in the trash or recycle bin.

Arlington and Montgomery counties have launched a new initiative to combat the problem. They've entered into a partnership with Catalog Choice, an organization people can use to get on the Do Not Mail list.

The free service allows residents to stop unwanted phone books, catalogs, coupons and credit card solicitations at the source -- ultimately reducing the environmental impact
