Police are searching for two men who stole from residents of the Bethlehem House, a home for people with developmental disabilities.

“I saw a head look in where I was,” says Dolores Wilson. The 78-year-old was asleep upstairs when a man wearing a mask demanded her cell phone and her money.

“I sat up in the bed and said, ‘Who are you? Where did you come from and what do you want?’”

He threatened her with a gun if she didn’t do what he said.

“He said, ‘I’ll shoot if you don’t give it to me,’ so of course I gave it to him,” she says.

Even when the man got her phone, Wilson says, she followed him to the other rooms in the house on Lawrence Street in Northeast D.C. She was worried he would hurt the others who live at the Bethlehem House. Five others were sleeping.

“He was looking on the floor and tried to get the pocketbook. I said, ‘There’s medicine in there.’ I was fighting for the medicine.”

The robber got through a window, the only one left unlocked by accident. Normally, the alarm would be on as well, but not Monday night. Two wallets were stolen, including Wilson’s, and her secret savings stash.

Fortunately, no one was hurt. There was another man waiting for the robber on the street. They were seen walking down the street together, but because it was so dark outside, it was hard to get a good description of the two suspects.
