Fatal trailer home fire in Maryland City
Updated: January 2, 2013 - 05:55 pm
One person is dead after a fire ripped through a trailer in Maryland City. It broke out around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and quickly turned into a massive blaze.
A long stretch of Brock Bridge Road was closed because fire fighters were forced to roll out hundreds of feet of hose to get to the burning home.
“Flames were over top of the roof. It was just horrible,” says Stephanie Grushart.
“It was just coming out of everywhere,” says Robin Parnell.
Residents of the Parkway Village trailer park started hearing not only the sound of the flames ripping through the double-wide mobile home, but also the sound of ammunition going off.
“My husband said ‘The trailer is rocking behind us,’ and tried to save the gentleman in the house,” says Grushart.
An elderly resident believed to have been confined to a wheelchair was inside. Two dogs are unaccounted for and the man was killed. Before help arrived, a neighbor and another man tried going in with a garden hose.
“I know he was in a wheelchair. That is why they just built a ramp on the other side,” says Charles Burton.
“He’s been sick, you know, and it’s a shame,” says Parnell. “He fought being sick all that time and he has to go like that.”
“The smoke was thick. We heard the rounds and backed out,” says a neighbor.
The man was believed to be in his seventies and was a gun collector. The rounds going off proved to be a big challenge for firefighters who were already dealing with heavy smoke and very narrow roads with no fire hydrants.
A woman who owns the house is visibly distraught.
“His daughter and wife were out,” she says.
The man has not been identified yet because his body is so badly burned.
Neighbors are emotional, but also worried that this fire may be connected to a fire just down the street two days ago.
