UVA-Wise lockdown: Shooter-on-campus claim a hoax
Updated: January 24, 2013 - 01:37 pm
A student at the University of Virginia's College at Wise whose Wednesday night call to authorities about a shooter on campus admitted that it was a hoax, school officials say.
The southwest Virginia college campus was placed on lockdown just before 9:30 p.m. after a student called police to report an alleged gunman on campus. Multiple police agencies then rushed to the campus and executed a building-by-building search for a shooter.
However, Bryant Alexander Hairston, the student who called authorities, admitted that the claim of a gunman on campus was a hoax.
The university's police department said Thursday that the Martinsville native is charged with falsely summoning law enforcement officials.
Campus police say the sophomore psychology major won't be allowed on campus pending review of the charges.
The lockdown was lifted just before 11 p.m.
