John Leopold trial: Judge finds Leopold guilty of misconduct in office
Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold was found guilty of two counts of misconduct in office Tuesday. However, the judge found him not guilty on two related counts.
Leopold was convicted of using his security detail to remove the campaign signs of his competitors. He was also found guilty of misusing county employees for personal purposes, including having his on-duty officer drive him to a bowling alley parking lot for a sexual tryst.
The misconduct in office charge also covered Leopold demanding his officers and assistant change his catheter up to two to three times daily for nine months. The judge called this act "predatory and cruel."
Leopold was found not guilty of two counts of misconduct in office, as well as one count related to fraudulent misappropriations.
The 69-year-old Republican is in his second term as county executive.
As far as his seat as a county executive, Anne Arundel County Council Chairman Jerry Walker wants a vote next week to throw Leopold out.
"The citizens of this county deserve to have elected officials that aren't guilty of crimes," Walker said.
Leopold is not facing jail time, but many citizens say he can't possibly still serve as county executive.
Brittany Blair of Annapolis said, "I don't trust him; I honestly don't."
But not everyone thinks Leopold should be thrown out.
"It's unfortunate for the county, because he's been, in my opinion, a pretty good county executive," Annapolis resident Jim Martin said.
Martin voted for Leopold. While he's disappointed, he doesn't think Leopold should be removed before his term ends late next year.
"In the scale of things, there was no blood shed, and I don't know that the harm was irreparable," Martin added.
