Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold waived his right to a jury trial Thursday morning, setting the setting the stage for a bench trial on charges he improperly used his police detail on several occasions, the Daily Record reports.

Jury selection for Leopold's trial began Wednesday, nearly a year after the county executive was indicted on four counts of misconduct in office and an additional count of misappropriation of county funds.

The accusations link back to several incidents in which Leopold is said to have misused his police detail to drive him to a local mall parking lot, where he would have sex with women. He's also alleged to have had officers drive him around to remove signs of political opponents and to create dossiers on them.

Opening statements will commence in Leopold's trial on Friday morning, the Daily Record says.
