Lewisdale duplex fire kills 65-year-old man
A Prince George's County man died late Sunday night after his home caught fire, fire officials say.
The fire happened in half of a duplex in the 6600 block of 24th Place in the Lewisdale portion of Hyattsville, Prince George's County Fire officials say. First responders were called to the blaze just after 10 p.m. Sunday, where they found a small fire in the home's basement.
Two people, a 65-year-old man and his wife, were able to escape the fire, but the man collapsed after being treated at the scene for breathing problems and chest pains. Preparations were being made to take the man, who has not been identified, to an area hospital for treatment when officials say he collapsed and suffered cardiac arrest.
The man's wife was not seriously injured in the fire, authorities say, and three dogs and three cats were also rescued from the fire.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. Maryland's Chief Medical Examiner will also determine an official cause of death for the victim.
The fire broke out just blocks away from the site of another fatal fire in the neighborhood. On Nov. 27, 2011, three people died in a house fire in the 2400 block of Griffen Street in Lewisdale.
