Pennsylvania Avenue bicycle lane U-turn crackdown to be enforced
Authorities in the District of Columbia are set to crack down on drivers who make U-turns across the bicycle lanes that run down Pennsylvania Avenue.
Officials from the District Department of Transportation, MPD and the D.C. Taxicab Commission will be spreading the word about the increased attention Wednesday near Pennsylvania Avenue and 13th Street NW, and authorities will be issuing citations to those who make illegal turns.
Emergency regulations enacted by Mayor Vincent Gray last year stepped up the pressure on motorists, who are not allowed to make U-turns across the bicycle lanes even when there are no cyclists near them. The fine for making an improper turn is $100.
In 2010 and 2011, District officials say that 11 of 14 total bike crashes on Pennsylvania Avenue happened after a driver made an illegal turn.
