Prince George's County firefighters are mourning the loss of one of their retired fire dogs that served the department for nearly a decade.
"Thunder," who served alongside county fire Capt. Dale Ednock from 2003 through September of 2012, passed away late last week after battling cancer for more than a year.
"Thunder's passing has left a tremendous emptiness in my family's home and hearts," Ednock said.
County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor said that Thunder and the Ednock family had a special bond not only as a family pet but as a "loyal and dedicated partner."
"His service to members of the Fire/EMS Department and Prince George's County as a whole was and still is appreciated," Bashoor said.
