Alexis Lewis killed in Gambrills crash
Her friends say all 18-year-old lexis Lewis wanted to do was take care of her nearly 1-year-old baby boy. She hoped to finish high school. But for now, she was working at a grocery store.
She was headed to work Thursday when she died in a horrific collision at Waugh Chapel Road and Silver Way in Gambrills. Now her friends stare at the scene in disbelief.
“We were like best friends,” says her friend Tammy Silver-Champagne. “She was like sister. It’s sad not gonna be able to see here anymore.”
Anne Arundel county police say that yesterday morning there were 60 crashes in a two hour period all caused by icy roads. Lewis was one of them. They say Lewis was travelling eastbound on Waugh Chapel Road. At a curve there was so much ice she slid off the road.
As Lewis' pick-up slid sideways, it crossed into the Westbound lanes and she hit a cement mixer. According to investigators, Lewis was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead on the scene.
“She was just always happy, always bubbly,” says her friend Kristen Weinstein.
