The District Department of Transportation is debating adjusting parking meter rates. It wants to encourage more turnover and make each space usable by as many people as possible.

That means the cost could rise in places like Georgetown and Adams Morgan during high traffic times. But the fee could drop elsewhere.

It's called performance-based parking.

Some drivers like the idea.

But AAA Mid-Atlantic is raising a red flag.

"Performance-based parking is about plucking millions of dollars in additional parking revenue from drivers cursing and cruising the block in the nation's capital, without D.C. ever solving the problem of the dearth of on-street or curbside parking," says AAA's John Townsend.

DDOT has made no decision yet on whether to raise or reduce the current rates. Money collected from meters goes into the general fund for the District. A lot of those funds are then allocated to Metro.
