Glenarden fire: One adult, two children dead in Glenarden house fire
Updated: February 22, 2013 - 04:33 pm
An adult and two children died early Thursday morning when a fire broke out at their Glenarden home, fire officials say.
Prince George's County Fire officials say that six people - a mother, father and four daughters - were inside the house in the 8600 block of Leslie Avenue when flames broke out at about 4 a.m. Out of the six, the father, 36, and two of the daughters, ages 8 and 4, died.
The deceased are identified as Darrell Terrance Price Jr., 36, Tania Monae Jeanita Price, 8, and Patrice Price, 4.
Authorities say the fire was electrical in nature.
"We have found no indication of a smoke detector in the home. That fact is very sad for me and frustrating," said Fire Chief Marc Bashoor.
When firefighters arrived, they removed the father and three children, aged 3, 8 and 11, from the home. None of them were breathing and three died; however, medics were able to revive an 11-year-old girl. The mother and an 8-year-old child were able to escape the house.
The mother and the child who escaped are expected to survive, but the 11-year-old remains in critical condition.
William Shorter says he's the girls grandfather.
"My grandkids are gone. What am I supposed to say?," Shorter lamented. "I just had 'em with me Saturday, and they gone."
Prince George's County Spokesman Mark Brady has characterized the fire as "a very tragic incident." Accelerant detection dogs were dispatched to the scene as part of an investigation into the cause of the fire, but authorities say they don't suspect foul play. The likely cause is an electrical failure.
