Gregory Lee Holley, Sr. killed during Woodbridge robbery
A 25-year-old man is accused of robbing and killing a former ATF Treaury Department officials who was out walking his dog in Woodbridge on Wednesday night.
Police say 55-year-old Gregory Lee Holley, Sr. was walking his dog in the 3700 block of Wertz Drive when he was robbed and killed by Aric Smith at about 9:40 p.m.
Police say Smith fled the scene and was taken into custody by an off-duty Prince William County lieutenant who was in the area. Smith took the victim's wallet and phone, police say.
Smith is charged with first degree murder, armed robbery and using a fire arm during a felony. He is being held without bond.
Holley started his career in government with the IRS before moving to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Among other positions, he served as the Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Division of the ATF.
From 2005 to 2009, he worked for the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
The ATF provided the following statement from Holley's family:
As we deal with the deep pain and the reality of what has happened, we find some comfort in the incredible person Gregory L. Holley, Sr was. As a former special agent with ATF and the Treasury Inspector General Tax Administration this is something loved ones try to prepare for, but never expect to have to deal with. Greg’s life work was about fighting violent crime, and unfortunately it was violent crime that took his life.
Greg was a faithful member of New Life Anointed Ministries International (NLAMI) since March 2006. He served faithfully in various volunteer positions wherever help was needed – always with a smile and a kind word. After retirement from government service, Greg served as the Chief Financial Officer of NLAMI where he directed the financial operations of the organization as well as the Business Affairs and Community Development Departments.
Greg spent his life helping others and was well liked and respected. We would like to thank everyone for the many thoughts and prayers extended to our family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
