The death of a 4-year-old girl in a Southeast Washington fire has been ruled a homicide, and police have made an arrest.
Jerome Calvary Lewis, 46, was arrested Friday in connection with the death of Samauri Jenkins.
Jenkins died Tuesday from injuries she suffered in the Feb. 17 fire.
D.C. Fire officials say the fire broke out in the basement of a home in the 2600 block of 33rd Street SE at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday. The heat was so intense that officials say the home's siding began to melt.
In total, seven people were in the home when it caught fire and four had to be pulled out.
Lewis was one of the adults who escaped the fire. The victim was a part of Lewis' extended family.
Lewis is charged with second degree murder, police say.
The cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation by the Arson Task Force.
