A manhunt is underway after a Fauquier County couple was found murdered inside their home. John Jeffries, 60, is wanted for questioning in the deaths of Nelson and Ethel Slack.

Armed officers and deputies searched on foot and in the rain Tuesday, looking for any evidence that could lead them to Jeffries. Police identified the Fredericksburg resident as a person of interest in the case Monday.

The search began Tuesday morning in the Wellington Woods Apartment complex in Fredericksburg, where authorities located the car owned by Nelson and Ethel Slack on Feb. 24. Nelson, 80, and Ethel, 74, were found dead at 7282 Bunker Hill Rd. earlier that day, according to a statement by the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office.

"I was scared, because I didn't know if someone was around my house or not," neighbor Jackie Gaines said.

Gaines has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years and has never seen anything like this.

She added, "Well, I'm scared. I'll keep my doors locked."

Tuesday's search also centered around a home near the apartments on Morningside Drive, where an assault took place Saturday night. Jeffries is also thought to be responsible for that crime.

At one point, officer had guns drawn near a home; at another point, the crew was deep in the woods. Clothing was among some of the evidence recovered near the apartments.

Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office Captain Jeff Pearce said, "We're gonna operate under the assumption he's still in the area, but we don't know that for sure. And until we have him in custody, we will follow every lead as far as it takes us."
