WASHINGTON (AP) - A judge will reassess whether Albrecht Muth, the man accused of fatally beating his wife inside their Washington home, can continue to represent himself after he has become weak from fasting.

A D.C. Superior Court judge set a hearing for Wednesday in the case. Muth is said to have been fasting since late December and apparently so weak he can no longer sit up or walk. He was hospitalized Jan. 20.

Muth is charged with first-degree murder in the August 2011 death of his wife Viola Drath, a 91-year-old German journalist and socialite. Drath was found strangled and beaten in a bathroom of the couple's row home Georgetown.

Doctors initially said Muth was too delusional to stand trial, but they later concluded he was trying to manipulate the legal system.
