Lorton Sub Shop worker burned after device thrown into store
A sub shop worker was injured Wednesday morning when officials say a person threw an incendiary device into a Lorton sandwich shop.
Fairfax County Fire officials say that the incident happened at about 10:30 a.m. at the Lorton Sub Shop, located at 9504 Richmond Highway in Lorton.
The victim sustained burn injuries and has been taken to a burn unit for treatment.
Sharon Flynn manages the thrift shop next door to the Lorton sub shop, where the explosion occurred.
Moments before the explosion, a man asked to use her restroom. But Flynn told him they don't have any for the public.
"So he walked out of the door and I heard an explosion,” she says.
Phillip Green saw smoke from a few blocks away and ran over, only to see the sub shop owner in the parking lot.
He "was burnt bad on his arm and staggering,” Green says.
Within minutes, Fairfax firefighters put out the fire, transported the sub shop owner to a burn unit in D.C, then began piecing together what happened.
"Whether or not there was a device or a bomb, none of that has been determined at this point,” said one fire official.
