An aggressive search for clues continues Thursday in Montgomery County for a hit-and-run driver who police say killed a mother and a beloved part of the community.

Montgomery County Police say Marlyn Eres Ali was killed as she crossed Connecticut Avenue in Wheaton Tuesday.

Around 8:15 p.m., police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck in the area of Connecticut Avenue and Randolph Road. Authorities found Ali and took her to Suburban Hospital, where she later died.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Ali was crossing from east to west on Connecticut Avenue and crossed the northbound lanes safely but was struck by a vehicle in the southbound lanes. The driver fled the scene.

On Thursday, Montgomery County detectives issued a lookout for a Toyota Corolla of unknown color from the late 1990s or early 2000s. The car may have front-end damage as a result of the crash.

Police closed part of Connecticut Avenue Wednesday night, trying to find out who is responsible. For hours, the busy roadway was at a standstill while police handed out flyers.

Ali was coming from her job in the District where she worked as a nanny for Jessica Daly.

"She was a wonderful, wonderful person," Daly said. "She was among the most caring and warm people I have known in my life."

Daly says the Filipino native was like a member of the family.

"My little baby was just learning to walk. She was so proud of her," she said. "She took so much pride in raising our children."

Loved ones say Ali, after years of hard work, had earned her U.S. citizenship only a few months ago. They never imagined a short walk home would end a life of so much purpose.

The circumstances of this collision remain under investigation. Detectives are requesting that anyone with information concerning this collision or the vehicle and driver involved in it, contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at (240) 773-6620.
