A bill that would reverse Maryland's law prohibiting illegal immigrants from obtaining driver's licenses is in play in the state's legislature, WTOP reports.

Maryland State Sen. Victor Ramirez, D-Prince George's, says that the measure he's sponsoring is a "necessity."

"It would allow people to drive to work, to get insurance," he told WTOP, adding that his bill would offer more protections and generate millions of dollars in new revenue.

The state outlawed giving licenses to illegal immigrants in 2009. WTOP says that the bill has strong support from fellow Democrats.

Washington state, New Mexico and Illinois all allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses, the Washington Times says.
