A 17-year-old Osbourn Park High School student was killed Thursday in a single-car crash in Manassas, officials say.
The crash happened in the 10600 block of Lake Jackson Drive in Manassas just after 11 a.m. Thursday. Prince William County Police say that the 2008 Ford Mustang, driven by Michael Murphy Schmelzinger, was driving southbound when the car left the road and hit a tree.
Schmelzinger was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation into the crash continues, but authorities say speed was a factor in the crash.
Osbourn Park High School Neil Beech issued this statement Thursday night:
"It is with great sadness that I share the news of the death of one of our students. Michael Schmelzinger of Manassas was killed today in a one-car accident on Lake Jackson Drive.
A 17-year old junior, Michael was well-liked and well-known at Osbourn Park for his swimming, lacrosse and academic prowess.
Counselors will be on hand tomorrow to assist students and staff in dealing with this tragedy. We will band together as a close-knit school to celebrate his life and deal with his loss. Please be sure to respect the privacy of Michael's family at this difficult time."
