Prince George's County officer fires gun while responding to robbery
A police chopper searched from the air while officers and canines scattered throughout a Seat Pleasant neighborhood, looking for a man who allegedly pulled a gun on a female police officer. That officer pulled out her gun and shot at the suspect as he fled.
Investigators say the officer was responding to a 9 a.m. robbery in the 6900 block of Opal Place when she was confronted by an armed suspect in the rear of the residence.
"Fearing for life that officer did discharge [her] weapon. It's not clear whether one or more of persons may have been struck," said Prince George's County Lt. William Alexander."It's not clear if there was an exchange of gunfire or only the officer fired.
The suspect's alleged accomplice was caught and arrested inside the home on Opal Place. Police recovered two guns from the scene. They say the home was targeted.
"You hear gunshots, but it's not common. This is the first time it happened this close to my house," said neighbor Chris Evans.
Residents say they need more police presence in the neighborhood. Just down the street, 25-year-old Nicoh Meyhew was fatally shot in Dec. while holding his toddler son.
Police are searching for one, possibly two, suspects in connection with Wednesday's case.
The patrol officer, a six-year veteran, is currently on routine administrative leave.
