They are Virginia's newest multi-millionaires thanks to a winning Powerball ticket purchased on Superbowl Sunday.

Dave Honeywell bought the Easy Pick ticket from a Lottery Express machine as he was flying out of the Richmond airport on a business trip.

It wasn't until four days later that he learned he had the lucky numbers.

“I just started reading the numbers from left to right and I'm like ‘this can't be,’” he said. “And I looked up at the drawing date to make sure it was the same date. And I was like, ‘that can't be.’ And pretty soon, my hands were shaking like this.”

His wife, Nancy Honeywell, was afraid Honeywell might be sick.

“Then he calls me and he goes, ‘I think my heart starts beating again.’ And I'm thinking he's sick,” she says.

He wasn’t sick. He was just $217 million richer. He took the $136 million cash option.

The 23 year federal worker finished out his job in Denver then flew home with the ticket strapped to his body in a money belt.

Now he and his wife plan to retire from the Department of Defense, replace their car that has 170,000 miles on it. And they won't have to be concerned about their job security.

“We were so worried about sequestration and the furlough and all of that which we were going to be a part of so all those fears are definitely gone now,” Honeywell says. so we feel much better.

Until Thursday, the Honeywells had told very few people. They may soon find that they have celebrity status in the hometown here in Fredericksburg.

Nancy Honeywell says she still does her own laundry and her own dishes. Only time will tell how long that will last.
