Big East Tournament 2013: Georgetown, Syracuse to tip off one final time
Less than a week after what was thought to be the grand finale of their long-standing rivalry, Georgetown and Syracuse apparently just can't quit each other.
After both the Hoyas and Orange won in their respective Big East Tournament quarterfinal games on Thursday, the teams will square off one more time Friday night with a trip to the conference championship game on the line.
Georgetown throttled Syracuse 61-39 on March 9 at the Verizon Center in what was the team's final regular season Big East match-up. The teams have gone at it tooth-and-nail since they were both charter members of the conference in 1979.
The Hoyas knocked off Cincinnati 62-43 at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, while Syracuse advanced with a nailbiting 62-59 victory over Pittsburgh.
Georgetown and several other schools, dubbed the "Catholic 7," will split off into their own league starting next season. They'll retain the Big East name. Syracuse, meanwhile, will join the Atlantic Coast Conference in all sports this fall.
Over the years, Syracuse and Georgetown have valiantly battled for the Big East title on several occasiosn, as College Basketball Talk outlined before last Saturday's game.
Tip-off for Friday's Big East semifinal is set for 7 p.m. in New York. The winner advances to play the winner of Notre Dame/Louisville in the Big East championship.
