WASHINGTON (AP) - Six airport towers in the Washington region will shut down due to federal budget cuts.

The six are among 149 announced by the Federal Aviation Administration on Friday. The towers will close starting early next month as the federal agency trims hundreds of millions of dollars from its budget because of the ongoing budget battle in Congress.

The airports include Lynchburg Regional in Virginia and Martin State outside of Baltimore. Airports in Easton, Frederick, Hagerstown and Salisbury also are affected. Frederick, like many small airports, did not have a tower until last year.

The closures will not force the airports to shut down, but pilots will be left to coordinate takeoffs and landings among themselves. Those procedures are familiar to all pilots.
