Defense of Marriage Act: Military members keeping close eye on SCOTUS ruling
Gay members of the military are keeping an especially close on on Supreme Court arguments on the Defense of Marriage act, Military Times reports.
Because of DOMA, federal law defines marriage as between one man and one woman, and that regulation has kept spouses of gay service members from collecting survivor benefits if their loved one were to die in action.
Military Times reports if the high court were to strike down DOMA, major changes could come quickly to the way the military handles such cases.
After the nation's highest court heard arguments for and against upholding California's Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage, the justices will hear arguments on DOMA Wednesday.
