Updated: March 15, 2013 - 12:42 pm
A 31-year-old man who was about to receive his college degree was shot and killed as he walked to his Northeast Washington home late Thursday night, MPD officials say.
The shooting took place at 1000 44th Street in the Deanwood neighborhood of Northeast D.C. Police say the man, who has been identified as Akinwole Williams, was shot in the chest at about 11:40 p.m.
Williams was taken to an area hospital, where he later died. He was a December 2012 graduate of Catholic University and was to receive his degree in Interdisciplinary Studies this May, university spokesman Victor Nakas says.
Nakas says his family will be invited to accept the degree on his behalf.
The shooting remains under investigation. A search for a suspect and a motive is underway.
