Olney sewer line leak dumps sewage into Reddy Branch Creek
WSSC officials say crews have found the source of a sewer main break that is causing overflows into an Olney creek. But Montgomery County residents are still urged to reduce their water usage until repairs are complete.
Crews came upon the sewage overflow Tuesday morning near the Reddy Branch Wastewater Pumping Station on Brighton Dam Road. It was quickly shut down to ease pressure on the line and make way for repairs.
WSSC says that workers dug down 18 feed to the buried pipe to locate the broken section. The physical location of the pipe, which is close to underground utility lines, slowed progress.
Officials estimate that about 1.5 million gallons of wastewater has overflowed into the creek, which flows to the Patuxent River.
