The suspect in a late-night attempted home invasion in District Heights is recovering at an area hospital after being shot by a homeowner, officials say.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m. Thursday, police responded to a disturbance at an apartment building along the 3300 block of Walters Lane in District Heights.

A preliminary investigation found that the suspect started knocking loudly on the homeowner’s door. He then left, but then returned and started knocking loudly again.

The homeowner opened his door to investigate what was going on and the suspect tried to force his way into the home. The homeowner was armed with a gun and shot the suspect.

The suspect then fled to another apartment where he tried to force his way into a second location.

Police found the suspect in the last location and he was transported to a nearby hospital, suffering from a gunshot wound.

His condition is unknown at this time and the case is still under investigation.
