Stephen Strasburg to start on Opening Day for Washington Nationals
The Washington Nationals will waste no time getting Stephen Strasburg on the mound in 2013, manager Davey Johnson said Wednesday, announcing the righty as his Opening Day starter.
The Washington Times reports that Strasburg will be on the mound when the Nationals host the Miami Marlins at Nationals Park on April 1.
Strasburg went 15-6 with a 3.16 earned-run average in 28 starts last season for the National League East champions. However, his entire season was dominated by chatter of when the team would end his season as he continued to recover from Tommy John surgery.
His season ultimately ended Sept. 8, a day after giving up five earned runs in just three innings in his final start of the year. Estimates of an "innings limit" in 2012 ranged from 160 to 180; Strasburg ended up throwing 159.1 innings.
The fourth-year starter has said previously that his aim for 2013 is to throw 200 innings.
The Times says that Johnson has not yet announced the rest of the rotation.
