Wegmans to hire 500, could spur growth in Germantown
The new Wegmans store in Germantown isn't much more than walls and windows right now, but the company is hiring.
The company hopes to add more than 500 full and part time jobs before opening the store this fall. They've already had more than 2,500 applications. And people hired in the next few weeks could see pay checks as soon as late April.
"What it comes down to is we're looking for people with a passion for food and a passion for people," says store manager Phil Quattrini. "We've probably done 300 phone screens and 4-5 face to face interviews. The second round if you will."
The hiring process is a lot faster than the development process. But the developers hope Wegmans will be a catalyst for future development around the site.
Andrew Chod, vice president of Minkoff Development Corporation says a grocery anchor like Wegmans can change the face of the community.
"It's going to help other developers build more office buildings; it's going to help build more apartment buildings; its going to build the office component that's been missing in Germantown for so long," Chod says.
Germantown won't just be a place to pass through on the way to work, but a place to go to work, Chod says.
