Bacterial meningitis vaccines recommended by D.C. clinic
Washington's Whitman-Walker Clinic is recommending that all gay and bisexual men in the D.C. area be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis, the organization says on its website.
The agency is making the suggestion in response to an ongoing, deadly outbreak of meningitis inside New York's gay community, during which seven men have died and 22 more have been sickened by the disease.
The New York Department of Health is concerned that the outbreak has been linked to men who have used websites or apps to meet men for "close and intimate" contact. However, according to NBC New York, more than half of these meningitis cases have no link to the technology.
Whitman-Walker officials say that those seeking the vaccine can request it through their individual providers.
